StarTropics for NES had a “letter from your uncle” in the manual, that you had to soak in water to reveal the submarine’s activation code when you reached Chapter 4. I think that was the only time we used the Nintendo tip line, because of a lost manual!
Some games let you keep playing without the correct code… until the difficulty automatically ramped up to impossible levels.

Many 80s games have an amusing hybrid design. Galaga has its game code and sprites in ROM, but has an entire custom chip that is a dedicated circuit for generating the ship explosion sound, another custom chip that only makes the scrolling starfield, etc.
We had tons of pirated Commodore 64 games. Some single-player games became two-player with my little brother; “OK, I’ll drive the car while you try every key on the keyboard.”

GoldenEye has the dual controller schemes too. A bit awkward in that you still have to be able to access the A & B buttons from the center grip; “2.1 Plenty” and switch the camera control off of inverted, personally. Hold the right controller at a slight angle to reach A & B and it’s not horrible… 😅
Can you tell my family’s been getting back into N64 lately? Some are experiencing the turn-of-the-century gaming for the first time. Although I’m spoiled from playing the recompiled Perfect Dark on Steam Deck and having total “control of the controls” including gyro aim.

Two of my family members are still rocking machines of this vintage. Get a Vishera-based (8300 series) FX CPU if you can find it cheap, so you at least have x86-64-v2 instruction set. It helps. You probably have (Realtek?) gigabit networking onboard, but an Intel gigabit card will improve networking performance.
When streaming, you’re running the game and encoding video at the same time. This will make the PC double as a space heater, which might be OK if you’re in the northern hemisphere and approaching winter! 😉
