  • Similarly, when I tried to learn to play using a mute, it sounded like absolute dogshit because the mute changes a ton about how the instrument sounds and feels to play. You’re going to sound (and probably be) off key and the lung pressure feels different because you’re blocking part of the air flow out of the instrument. It requires a technique adjustment to sound right.

The world of Morrowind, in aggregate, is beautiful and sometimes genuinely breathtaking.

Individual models may look like deep fried asshole, but they come together to form an aesthetic that I personally like quite a lot.

  • I just openly laughed right at them when I was told that, especially because my dad was no longer able to keep up with my math homework by the seventh grade.

These days I’m out on my own, with a house and a fiancée, still play video games as a primary hobby, and he’s a Trump voter in a shitty apartment that doesn’t talk about anything except crying about all the n[REDACTED]s and transes. One of us sure rotted his brain and I’m pretty confident saying it probably wasn’t me.

  • Minus the “pay $5 to skip” part, retro games are overwhelmingly more likely to be the second than the first. How do you keep someone playing your game for longer than a weekend, in an age where games are 12mb you can’t add new content after you ship? You make your game hard as balls and require a ton of grinding.

Not all games were like this, but tons were. Final fantasy, Ghosts n Ghouls/Goblins, Battletoads, and more all follow this pattern. Even Pokémon isn’t exactly hard but half of the game is just grinding.

  • I also wasn’t familiar so I looked them up.

Reality Labs is Meta’s VR/metaverse branch.

Mapillary was previously a crowdsourced maps program like OpenStreetMaps, which was acquired by Meta in 2020. Presumably they’re looking to EEE it and fold it into Meta proper.

Beluga is a Twitter clone, I can’t find anything objectively bad about it other than being a Twitter clone.

  • I can tell you how often I’ve heard idiotic ideas like how some other country like China will just invade and take us over if we aren’t #1 in everything. Like being #2 or 3 somehow means death.

Like all things this is GOP projection. I’ve been being told from the day I was born that if the USA lost its stranglehold on the world then we’d immediately be facing a large scale ground invasion from China or Russia or Iran. As if they were just itching for any opportunity to show up and destroy us because America was just too awesome. Everyone in the entire world hates us because we have so much money and do so well at being the world police, they call us the Great Satan, etc etc.

Lo and behold, the US has been in over 200 military operations since 1950, where we keep itching to show up and destroy someone who doesn’t want us around. People didn’t hate us because of our culture or our money, they hated us because we kept showing up to weaker countries after big devastating events and informing them that they now have a new leader that answers to America, and if you don’t like it, we’ll bomb you for the next 20 years.

The conservative response to any other nation showing some sort of weakness is, traditionally, to load up some boots and some bombs and send em on over to see what sort of profit we can blow up. They cannot fathom that anyone else would do something differently.

  • The aviation industry can absorb a whole lot of sin before they’re on equal danger footing with automotive, if for no other reason than sheer volume. Most people, unless you fly constantly for work, get on a plane once a year or less. Most people drive to work almost every day. Roads have traffic, the skies do not (at least, not nearly to the same extent, midair collisions can happen but they’re rare).

I have no doubt the skies are about to become noticeably less safe, but they’ve got a looooot of catching up to do before they dethrone the automobile as one of the top 3 leading causes of death in America.

  • I missed System Shock 1 and 2 on release (I was 1 and 6 years old, respectively) but I’ve recently been playing the SS1 remake and, holy shit, this is an incredible game.

I think the original is held back by its UI but the actual game itself, which the remake pretty much preserves almost one to one, is incredibly solid even by modern standards. I’ve been super hooked on it and it’s opened my eyes to an entire lineage of games that I’ve not paid attention to - System Shock 2, Deus Ex, and Prey are the big three that I have my eye on when I finish with SS1 Remake.
